THE PROBLEM WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF SKIN

THE PROBLEM WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF SKIN

Every one of us wishes for flawless and radiant look. Unfortunately, everyone does not have the same skin type. A general complaint amongst people is that their skin glows at the start of the day and becomes greasy by mid-day. People with this kind of oily or combination type skin are increasing in number due to environmental and lifestyle modifications. The problem lies in handling this kind of skin and the problems that come with it; like pimples, acne, white heads, black heads, post acne marks or scars, etc.

People with oily skin are blessed with slower aging. All they need is a strict routine of skin care that can guide them to perfect skin.

Genetic

A family having a genetic predisposition to large sebaceous glands that produce excess oil resulting in clogged pores and breakouts.

Hormonal

Pregnancy, pre and perimenopausal period can result in hormonal fluctuations. Excess production of androgens could trigger sebaceous glands resulting in excess oil production.

Seasonal

Increase in the heat and humidity during summer and spring increases the oil production. In winter, dry air dehydrates the skin that overcompensates by producing excess oil.

Medication

Any medication that results in dehydration followed by overcompensation of skin, produces excess oil. Moreover, hormonal birth control and hormonal replacement medications also cause excess oil production.

Stress

Stress triggers the production of excess androgens that leads to production of excess oil.

Tanning

Although tanning can reduce oil production, however in the long run it can trigger sebaceous glands to produce excess oil.

Skincare products

Cleansing more than twice a day, over-exfoliation, applying too much pressure while scrubbing, use of products that do not meet the requirements of your specific skin type are some of the reasons for excessive oil production.

Skincare tools

Scrubbing with washed clothes, rotating and cleansing brush, buff puffs and strips can irritate and over dry the skin further resulting in excess oil production.

The problems with oily skin

Excess oil production triggers a series of skin problems such as:

Those with oily skin know how it feels to have a shine on their face. During adolescence, it is the hormonal imbalance that results in having oily skin. Over exfoliation often causes formation of layers of skin that gives it a certain texture. As the light reflects off the skin easily, the skin appears shiny.

Also, the hyper-active sebaceous glands cause more oil secretion that gives your skin a shiny appearance. The skin appears greasy and attracts dirt and dust easily giving you an unkempt and dull look.

Applying makeup on top of oily skin does not hide the shine or the surface oil. After some time, your face starts appearing dark and in places becomes patchy making certain areas of the face appear uneven.

Shiny Patchy Skin

A pimple is a result of a blocked skin pore. In the process of skin shedding, sebaceous glands present in every pore secrete excess sebum that mix with dead cells and bacteria specially Propionibacterium acnes resulting in clogged pores forming a pimple.

Causes of Pimples

Acne is caused due to blockage of follicles. In response to hyper-keratinisation, sebum and keratin plugs start growing. It results in enlargement of sebaceous glands that secrete excess of sebum, further aggravating the blockage of follicles. Whiteheads and blackheads are the two popular types of acne commonly noticed on nose, chin, forehead, etc.

  • Whiteheads also known as closed comedones are blocked follicles filled with sebum, keratin plugs and exfoliated cells that open on the skin surface with a small pore opening.

  • Blackheads also known as open comedones are similar to white comedones except they have a wide opening on the skin surface that results in oxidation of melanin, imparting the black colour.

  • Depending on the intensity of acne, breakouts can cause acne scars or marks. Hyper pigmented skin without change in the texture, such as pitting or pocked area, can result in post-acne marks whereas any change in skin texture can cause post-acne scars.
